How We Build Custom Campervans: Inside Our Latest Mercedes Sprinter Conversion

Every build starts differently - and this one was no exception.

At Amber Fitouts, we love taking the time to understand each client’s needs, dreams, and the way they imagine using their van. How do you cook? How do you sleep? What are your passions? Will you be working from the road? Where will all your things live?

These questions might sound simple, but they’re essential. They help us understand what kind of campervan build we’re creating in the first place.

Whether it’s your first time travelling, you’re planning weekend escapes, or you’ve already been living the van life for years, there’s always a lot to explore before landing on the final design.

For this custom Mercedes Sprinter campervan conversion, it was important for us to understand the client’s budget, priorities and must-haves from the beginning. Instead of offering a fixed layout, we spent time brainstorming together, talking through ideas, and shaping a design that felt unique to the way they wanted to travel.

This young couple was dreaming about a comfortable life on the road - rolling up and down the coast, cooking good food, working on the go, and having a space that felt calm, practical and homely.

They loved cooking, so a proper kitchen space was a must. They were also getting more into photography and blogging, so having a comfortable work area was just as important. Overall, they were looking for a minimal, clean design with warm tones and accents of Tasmanian Oak.

Bringing Ideas Into a 3D Design

Once we had a clear understanding of how they wanted to travel, it was time to start designing.

One of the most valuable parts of our process is creating a 3D design before the build begins. It allows our clients to visualise their future van, make changes, and refine ideas long before a single piece of timber is cut.

For this Mercedes Sprinter build, we created the first design, sat down together to go through it, made adjustments, refined the details, and continued tweaking the layout until everything felt right.

Once the design was confirmed, we moved into selecting materials and finishes. This included cabinetry colours, benchtops, flooring, upholstery, wall and ceiling finishes - always finding the balance between beautiful, durable and easy to live with.

Only when every detail was agreed on, we moved into the build itself.

The Build Begins

The first step is always preparing the van and creating a solid foundation.

We started by cleaning and preparing the van before moving into insulation. Using our trusted Cork On natural insulation, we created a comfortable base that helps with temperature control, sound deadening and vapour control - all important parts of everyday comfort on the road.

Next came ventilation. Good airflow is essential in any campervan, so this Sprinter received a bonded window, a MaxxFan and an additional push-out window to maximise natural light and fresh air.

With the shell prepared, we moved onto framing and wiring. This is where a lot of the important work happens behind the scenes, creating the framework that everything else is built around.

Then came the exciting part - panelling.

This is where a van starts feeling less like a vehicle and more like a home. For this build, we used wall panelling finished in a warm natural colour, helping create the calm and welcoming feeling our clients were after.

Building Around the Way You Live

Cabinetry is where every custom van build becomes personal.

This Mercedes Sprinter featured a large kitchen designed for people who genuinely enjoy cooking, along with a practical office space that converts into a spacious bed when it’s time to relax.

Next came the plumbing system. For this build, we installed a Duetto hot water system supplying both the kitchen and an outdoor shower. Combined with a 90L fresh water tank and a 40L grey water tank, the setup was designed to comfortably support longer trips away from crowded campsites.

The electrical system was also tailored to the way our clients planned to travel. Because they wanted to cook using an induction cooktop and an air fryer, we installed a 310Ah battery system, 490W of solar and a 2000W inverter.

Finally, we completed the van with custom upholstery. Quality mattresses, curtains and soft furnishings are often the finishing touches that transform a well-built van into a cosy home on wheels.

Certification and Handover

Once the build is complete, we don’t want our clients worrying about finding engineers, chasing certificates, or trying to figure out registration requirements.

That’s why we help take care of the certification process as well.

Depending on the build, we organise engineering certificates, weighbridge certificates, electrical compliance certificates and any other required documentation needed to register the vehicle correctly.

And then comes our favourite day: handover day.

The moment when months of ideas, planning, designing and building come together. We hand over the keys, provide the certification documents, walk through the systems together, and send our clients off to begin their next chapter.
