Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about our custom van builds, process, pricing and support.
The best place to start is with your van at our workshop, where we can discuss ideas and design the perfect layout together. However, if you haven’t purchased a vehicle yet, don’t worry — we’re happy to offer guidance on which vans may best suit your travel style, budget and the type of build you’re looking for.
Absolutely. The right van depends on how you plan to travel and live. During our consultation, we’ll discuss your lifestyle, budget and priorities, then recommend the vehicle that best suits your needs.
Absolutely. Whether you’re after a simple weekend setup, a drawer system, a slide-out kitchen or custom storage, we can design and build a solution tailored to your vehicle and the way you like to travel.
Yes. Whether you’re comparing vans, exploring layouts or simply figuring out what’s possible, we’re happy to help you plan your project before making any big decisions.
Every project starts with a consultation where we get to know you, your travel style and your goals. From there, we prepare an estimate, develop a custom 3D design, refine the layout together, finalise your quotation, and choose materials and finishes before construction begins.
Throughout the build, we keep you updated with progress photos, organise all required certifications, and complete a full handover once everything is finished.
Yes. We offer a custom 3D design service to help you visualise your future van before committing to the build. It’s a great way to refine the layout, test ideas, and make sure everything works for your lifestyle before construction begins.
Our 3D design is offered as a standalone service and is priced separately from the build itself.
Every van we build is custom. While we have layouts and ideas that have proven themselves over years of van life, every project is designed around how you actually travel, work and live.
Absolutely. We begin by understanding your priorities and must-haves, then recommend the best combination of features, materials and systems to maximise your budget. Our goal is to create the best possible van without paying for features you don’t need.
Every build is different, but as a guide, small van conversions generally range from $25,000–$40,000, while larger off-grid builds typically range between $45,000–$85,000.
Pricing depends on the vehicle, electrical system, plumbing, cabinetry, materials and the level of customisation.
The biggest factors are the size of the van, the electrical system, plumbing, appliances, cabinetry finishes, and any custom features you’d like to include. During the design process, we’ll provide a transparent quote so you know exactly where your investment is going.
Smaller van conversions typically take around 3–5 weeks, while larger custom builds generally require 4–8 weeks, depending on the complexity of the project and our workshop schedule.
We recommend getting in touch as early as possible. Even if you haven’t purchased your van yet, we can start planning together and secure a place in our build schedule.
We work with staged payments. A deposit secures your build slot, followed by progress payments during construction, with the remaining balance due before handover.
Your payment schedule will be clearly outlined in your build contract before any work begins.
Every full build is different, but most include insulation, window installation, wall and ceiling panelling, flooring, cabinetry, electrical, plumbing, upholstery, and all required certifications for registration, including electrical certification, tare weight certificate, and engineering where required.
Of course. We offer a range of popular colours and finishes as standard, and we’re happy to offer additional colours or materials if you’re looking for something more unique.
That’s exactly what we do. Whether you need a mobile office, art studio, surfboard storage, bike storage, or simply a layout that works for your everyday adventures, we’ll design your van around the way you live.
Our main focus is full custom campervan conversions, but we may also take on selected upgrades or individual stages depending on the scope of the project. If you’re unsure, send us your ideas and we’ll let you know what’s possible.
Absolutely. We love seeing owners get involved in their projects and are happy to discuss which stages you can complete yourself.
For safety, certification and insurance reasons, however, all electrical work must be completed by our licensed electrician.
Definitely. We enjoy sharing the journey with our clients. We also send regular progress photos throughout the build, and if you’re local, we’re happy to arrange workshop visits at key stages.
Every electrical system is tailored to your needs. Depending on your build, it can include lithium batteries, solar panels, DC-DC chargers, inverters, USB and 12V outlets, 240V power points, LED lighting, wall-mounted fans, battery monitoring and more. All electrical work is completed and certified by our licensed electrician.
It depends on how you plan to use your van. A 12V system is perfect for lighting, charging devices and running a fridge. If you’d like to power higher-demand appliances such as an induction cooktop, coffee machine, air fryer or air conditioner, we’ll likely recommend a 240V inverter system.
We’ll discuss your travel style and daily power needs to design the electrical system that’s right for you.
Yes. We design solar systems to suit your energy needs, whether you’re travelling on weekends or living off-grid full-time.
Absolutely. We can install fresh and grey water systems, sinks, outdoor or indoor showers, hot water systems, and other plumbing solutions tailored to your build.
Yes. We organise all required certifications for your build, including electrical certification, tare weight documentation, and engineering certification where required for campervan or motorhome registration.
Yes. All electrical installations are completed by our licensed electrician and supplied with the required compliance certification.
Every Amber Fitouts build includes a 12-month workmanship warranty covering the work we’ve completed. Appliances and components are covered separately under their individual manufacturer warranties.
Absolutely. Whether we built your van or not, we’re happy to discuss upgrades to improve your existing setup. From adding solar, hot water and electrical components to modifying cabinetry or improving your layout, we’ll always assess what’s possible and recommend the best solution for your van.
If something isn’t quite right after handover, simply get in touch. We’ll always do our best to resolve the issue and ensure you’re happy with your build.
Yes. We’re always happy to answer questions, provide advice or help you plan future upgrades. Once you’re part of the Amber Fitouts family, we’re only a phone call or email away.
We don’t just build campervans — we’ve lived the lifestyle ourselves. After spending years travelling and living in our own van, we understand the little details that make a huge difference on the road.
Every build is designed around real-life experience, quality craftsmanship, and the way you actually want to travel. Our goal is simple: to build a van that feels like home, wherever the road takes you.
Yes. We make custom mattresses, seat cushions and curtains designed specifically for your campervan. Send us your measurements or bring your van to our workshop, and we’ll prepare a tailored quote.
Absolutely. We’ll assess your current setup and recommend the most suitable upgrade based on how you use your campervan and your future travel plans.
In many cases, yes. We’ll assess your current setup and the available space in your van to determine what’s possible, then recommend the best upgrade to suit your needs.

Our story
-
“We don’t need another boss, or another job… let’s just find other van lifers who need help getting on the road — and help them build their own tiny homes.”
Our skills back then were pretty limited, but our love for van life — and everything we’d learned building our own vans and working different trade jobs along the way — pushed us to learn fast.
We didn’t have a workshop.
We didn’t have a home base.
The only tools we had fit under the couch in our Troopy.Bunnings carpark became our office.
Our workbench was a foldable picnic table tucked behind the seats. And our fuel?
The dream that kept growing with every smile we saw on our first “clients’” faces. It didn’t take long to realise this was becoming something real.
And with winter rain setting in, we found our first little shelter — a cozy garage in the coastal suburbs. That space gave us something more than just cover.
It gave us the feeling that this was worth holding onto.Van after van, smile after smile —
we made the move back to the East Coast, to Sydney. There, we reconnected with our nomad friend Gianlu and moved into a shared workshop at a coffee roastery — the most inspiring place we could’ve wished for.
That’s where things really started to take shape.
That’s where Amber Fitouts was born.“Amber Fitouts tells the story of a cozy afternoon in nature, a moment where you are looking through your van’s window, watching waves crashing on the beach. The simplicity of a moment, much like looking up at a piece of Amber – a small simple fossil that when held up to the light, becomes its own kind of window.”
A year (and many vans) later, we said goodbye to our Gianlu as he left to pursuit his dreams.
And here we are now — Smilte and Jack — opening the doors to our own new workshop in the Northern Beaches.
A place where we welcome you to share your ideas, your lifestyle, your vision of a home on wheels. At Amber Fitouts, it’s always been about connection.
From our van life to yours. We’re here to listen, to understand, and to build something that feels like you —
with love, care, and intention in every detail. So maybe you’re somewhere at the beginning right now —
dreaming about your own moments on the road, or already halfway there.
Either way… we’d love to be part of it.
Come say hello.
Tell us your ideas. And let’s build something that feels like home — wherever you park it.
